Salus Interview – Juan Gonzalez CEO InsightMedi

As part of our interview series we were delighted to have the opportunity to speak to Juan Gonzalez,  CEO of global photo-sharing network for healthcare start up InsightMedi.  This great company is going from strength to strength as we wanted to know more about the background to the business and its vision for the future.

SD – Hi, could you please introduce yourself?

JG – Hi, my name is Juan González and I’m the CEO of InsightMedi, the global photo-sharing network for healthcare professionals. I’m originally from Venezuela. In 2011 I moved to Spain and I’ve been living in Madrid ever since.

Juan Gonzalez – CEO InsightMedi

SD – Where are you based?

JG – We’re based in Spain and the US. Even though we’re a global community, we have a permanent presence in Madrid, Pamplona, and Mallorca – in Spain – and Baltimore in the US.

SD – What is your background?

JG – I studied Computer Science back in Venezuela. Right after University I started working at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), specifically in the Computer Physics Lab.

I’ve been lucky to work with great people in many different countries throughout the years. The first part of my professional journey included developing software for the IVIC (Caracas, Venezuela), the Institute of Astronomy (University of Cambridge, UK), l’Observatoire de Paris (Paris, France), and Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA (Greenbelt, USA).

These days, and for the past couple of years, I’ve been focused on building a great company with an amazing team of talented people, committed to developing a great product, and driving its adoption across the globe.

SD – What has been the inspiration for InsightMedi?

JG – InsightMedi is the brainchild of Dr. Gonzalo Mora, an Orthopedic Surgeon from Pamplona, Spain. The idea turned into a real project early in 2013.

He found himself sharing more and more patients’ images with his colleagues and observing other physicians, as well as medical students, did the same thing using their mobile devices. This is an established practice among healthcare professionals all over the world, but the lack of a secured platform to do so has great legal, and moral implications. For some reason no one seemed to be really concerned to do something at the time.

This realization and the entrepreneurial nature of Gonzalo, drove him to reach our and find a team to build this platform. That’s exactly how InsightMedi was born.

SD – How does InsightMedi work?

JG – InsightMedi, as a platform, has two major goals:

  • Help users create content: the process will require you’d take or select a photo from your device, classify it (by Specialty, System, and Anatomical Region), add a description, and send it for review. Our moderators will then review and approve or reject the image based on privacy protection guidelines.
  • Help users discover content: you’ll be offered images based of your specialty and the profiles you follow. On top of that you have an Explore module where you can browse the whole database of images, based on pre-defined filters, hashtags, and user handles.

If I put in simpler words: It’d work exactly like Instagram, but with content moderation for every image.

SD – How does InsightMedi differ from other photo sharing apps?

JG – InsightMedi was created with security and patient’s privacy as a core, ubiquitous, feature. As a user you’ll have all the tools you need to de-identify every image you want to share. Using our editor you can easily remove names, faces, or any other identifiable patient’s feature with the tip of your finger.

The next big difference is that our content is moderated. Our team of doctors make sure all images uploaded are reviewed by specialists, and conform to international regulations. This approach will sacrifice immediacy, but it’ll improve quality and ensure privacy. We believe our user base is not only used to it but appreciates it.

SD – What do you see as your biggest challenges for InsightMedi?

JG – On one side, we face the same challenges as any other startup. We’re in a constant race to find our value proposition, learn about what our users need, and how to transform that knowledge into a product that works great. We do all of this with extremely scarce resources and an expiration date in the form of a burn rate.

On the other side, we have a few extra obstacles to handle that are particular to companies trying to bring change to the healthcare sector. International rules and regulations, security and privacy concerns, traditional Institutions reluctant to change, and extremely long sale cycles, are just a few of them.

That being said, we’re confident we’re in a very good shape to tackle all of the issues mentioned above. We’re not only working extremely hard, but we’re surrounding ourselves with knowledgeable, and highly motivated people (e.g. from Johns Hopkins, Abell Foundation, and BioHealth Innovation) who believe in InsightMedi’s mission.

SD – What do you see the digital health landscape being in 2020?

JG – To me, it is clear that wearable devices and the IoT, applied to healthcare, are going to grow dominant in the next five years.

I’m also hoping to witness a shift in the in the perception of medical Institutions, regarding patient data technology and innovation. I think it’s not only inevitable, but it’ll come from a combination of progress made by security mechanisms (e.g. better encryption, secure APIs, etc.), and a new wave of Compliance Officers, whom will be greatly informed and open to explore disruptive technology under secure environments.

SD – How do people find our more information?

JG – Just like every other company we do have an active presence all over the web. You can go to and get a first glimpse of what we do. There you’ll also have the links to check our Social Media accounts, and download the app for free.

That being said, if you really want to know more about our team, and our product you’ll need to go to our Medium blog posts and check:

SD – thanks for your time

JG – thank you Paul. Sincerely.
