Familiarity, omnipresence and capabilities of the smartphone present a particular opportunity and huge potential as a driver of improved patient outcomes
Oxfordshire, 23rd February 2015 – NHS primary care patients could use Medelinked a new UK-developed personal smartphone app to help manage the top seven causes of preventable mortality.
The app being demonstrated at NHS Health Check 2015 can help them to take control of their health management and act to avoid, reduce or manage their risk of developing future health problems associated with: high blood pressure; smoking; cholesterol; obesity; poor diet; physical inactivity and alcohol consumption.
Delivering real benefits to NHS patients, health professionals and the nation
Medelinked is one of a rapidly growing list of apps, devices and sensors compatible with the Medelinked Health Cloud. Integration with the Medelinked Health Cloud API and the potential to integrate with existing NHS systems is also allowing developers to create a series of new applications that could deliver real benefits to NHS patients, health professionals and the nation. These include blood pressure monitors and WiFi weight scales connected and integrated on the Medelinked platform via the Apple Health app.
The Medelinked app being demonstrated can also provide access to a patient’s own securely stored personal medical records, potentially allowing NHS patients to get immediate access to emergency assistance and medical advice.
The app could also provide NHS patients with peace of mind that if they need urgent medical treatment abroad – with permission, their medical history can be quickly and safely accessed and shared from their mobile device.
NHS Choices health library and Medelinked Health Cloud API
The app is listed in the NHS Choices health apps library. It is currently available for both Apple iOS and Android smartphones and downloadable from the Google Play and iTunes app stores. It enables patients to record a range of medical details including allergies, conditions, immunisations, medications and tests, and has the ability to store images of scans and x-rays to complete their health profile.
The app stores a patient’s medical records securely through the Medelinked Health Cloud-based online system. The patient has sole control over the information that is stored and can decide whether they wish any healthcare individual or organisation to view any part of their medical history. The patient can also choose any information they would like to store in a password-protected Emergency Records area, which a chosen family member or colleague can immediately access in the event of an emergency.
Real-time health advice
Medelinked can also allow patients to get health advice in real time and chat instantly with healthcare providers – for example their doctor, dentist, physiotherapist, optician, travel clinic – using IM, voice, text, email and video from their desktop.
Ian Gallifant, founder and CEO, Medlinked says: The NHS Healthcheck programme offers the opportunity of creating a new patient/provider healthcare partnership. But this should only be the start. Improving healthcare outcomes requires companies to continually fuel innovation to further improve the quality of healthcare providers’ customer service. In this respect it is the familiarity, omnipresence and capabilities of the smartphone that presents a particular opportunity and mark out its huge potential as a driver of improved patient outcomes.
NHS Healthcheck 2015
In Living Well for Longer, the Secretary of State for Health called on everyone within the health and care sector and beyond to take action to reduce premature mortality and help their communities to live longer, healthier lives.
NHS Health Check systematically targets the top seven causes of preventable mortality: high blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption. It is primarily a health improvement programme offering a genuine opportunity to engage people aged 40-74 in discussions about healthy lifestyles before they get sick and goes on to help them to take control of their health and take action to avoid, reduce or manage their risk of developing future health problems.
This conference is aimed at those individuals involved with commissioning, providing, evaluating and supporting the NHS Health Check programme from: senior officers and elected councillors from local government; local government public health commissioners; primary care; other public sector organisations; voluntary and community organisations; private sector providers and partners and academia.
Medelinked was founded in 2005 as Zaptag in order to allow individuals to use mobile technology and the cloud to increase the effectiveness of health care by enabling them to securely build their health profile online and to connect and share with their network of trusted health partners.
Managing all their health data in one place helps individuals securely track and monitor improvements easier and quicker and share vital data with their healthcare providers (doctor, consultant, insurer) to ensure they have access to their latest health data. This enables them to provide the best possible care and it keeps the individual in control of their own health.
The Medelinked Health Cloud and API is also allowing developers to create series of new applications that deliver real health benefits to the end user.
