Friday April 30th was WIRED Health 2016 and we met many innovative and inspiring companies who are helping change the health and wellbeing landscape for us all. Wayra, Telefonica’s startup accelerator showcased 4 of its hot healthtech innovators and we were lucky enough to grab some time with the CEO of Pzizz – the world’s most advanced sleep and powernap system.
SD – Hi, could you please introduce yourself?
I’m Rockwell Shah, CEO of Pzizz, where we deliver sleep at the push of a button.
SD – Where are you based?
We’re across three countries: the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Currently we’re headquartered at Wayra in Central London, where we’re part of the 2016 accelerator cohort.
SD – What is your background?
Our team has an illustrious background that spans a range of fields, including cognitive psychology, audio engineering, sleep hypnosis, app development, and medical software. After graduating Cornell University, I spent 9 years in U.S. healthcare at 4PatientCare, where I was the Chief Operating Officer.
SD – What has been the inspiration for pzizz?
The original inspiration for Pzizz was a simple insight: insomnia is generally caused by a disease called, “too much thinking.” So they key is, if you can quiet the mind, you can fall asleep. That’s what Pzizz does for you.
Insomnia is a huge problem globally. It affects 60 million in the U.S., 31% of Europe, and 2 billion people around the world. Helping such a big audience has been incredibly motivating, as everyday we get emails from people thanking us for helping them overcome their sleep issues.
SD – How does pzizz work?
Our patented system creates dynamic dreamscapes with music, voiceover, sound effects and ‘brain waves’ that quickly quiet your mind, put you to sleep, keep you asleep, and wake you up feeling refreshed. It’s really a magical experience, and it’s available now on iOS and Android for free for anyone to try. There’s nothing quite like waking up from a pzizz wondering how in the world you feel so refreshed and energized.
SD – How does pzizz differ from other companies in this space?
Pzizz has no side effects, can deliver sleep at the push of a button, and keeps its effectiveness over time. No other solution on the market, digital or otherwise, has this unique combination.
SD – What do you see as your biggest challenges for pzizz?
We’ve gotten great organic traffic so far. Over 250,000 downloads without any paid marketing. The next step is to really scale Pzizz and bring it to the world; to show people that getting great sleep can absolutely be a reality for them.
SD – What do you see the digital health landscape being in 2020?
We’ve seen the rise and somewhat fall of wearables. The days of devices giving you fancy dashboards with practically meaningless numbers about your health are coming to an end. People don’t want more data, they want better outcomes. And the products of the future will reflect that. Digital health will continue to transform from passive observation to active doing.
