App launched to help the one fifth of Britons dealing with depression and anxiety

A leading psychotherapist has teamed up with a former patient to create an app to help members of the public manage their stress and anxiety – issues that affect more than a fifth of British adults*. The app launch is in partnership with the UK’s most popular health and wellbeing website.

An iOS app has been created to help the millions of Britons affected by stress, anxiety and depression by a British psychologist and patient. The app is called Stress & Anxiety Companion – and, in beta testing, has been used by more than 10,000 people.

Drawing on the fundamentals of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – a proven goal-orientated treatment method – the creators of the app hope it will help users dealing with these issues.

The app was created by a leading British psychologist and a former patient. A video demonstrating the benefits of the app can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEfUN-H3eIU

Digital Strategist Dan Bladon sought help for chronic anxiety he experienced after a serious sporting nerve injury. His therapist Dr. Robin Hart introduced Dan to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and after two months he was feeling much better. Almost ten years after meeting Dr. Hart, Dan owns an app development company and has been able to realise his ambition to create a way for people to manage their stress, anxiety and depression conveniently.

Before working in a general medical practice where he met Dan, Dr. Robin Hart worked within the forensic psychology department of a large London prison.

The finished app includes tools to help users relax and reduce the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety, manage and reframe negative thinking, access easy to digest information about stress and anxiety and create innovative ‘Companion Thought Cards’ which let users visualise and share key insights with friends and family.

Stress & Anxiety Companion can be downloaded for iOS devices for £3.99 here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/stress-anxiety-companion/id786238252?mt=8.

Dan Bladon, co-founder of Stress & Anxiety Companion, had the following to say,

“The Stress & Anxiety Companion is my way of using my knowledge of the benefits of CBT alongside the skills formed in my day job as a Digital Strategist, to produce something which can help people like me, manage their stress and anxiety on a daily basis.

“It’s not a replacement for therapy or medication, but a tool which can be used alongside both to help us each live more productive and happier lives. With more than a fifth of our population affected by stress, depression and anxiety, I truly believe this app can help many people better manage their conditions.”

Dr. Robin Hart said,

“Primarily, I wanted to help to create something that would be a useful tool for my patients to use in addition to therapy; the sort of stuff we do in session but can easily be forgotten in the busy world outside of the psychologist’s office. The idea grew as we realised that this could be of very real value to anyone. As the statistics indicate, stress and anxiety are a part of life and we realised that this app could become everyone’s pocket stress and anxiety companion.”
